Welcome to Week 14 of Your Pregnancy.
What Is Happening With Baby This Week?
Your Baby is now performing more complex movements. At 14 weeks, Baby is very active, although you are weeks away from being able to feel all this movement.
Baby can now squint, swallow, respond to touch, make basic facial expressions, bend, stretch, kick and even uses the wall of the womb as a spring board. The kidneys are producing urine and Baby now pee’s in the womb and will continue to do so until birth. It’s like baby has his very own eco system right there inside the womb.
Fine hair is growing on the upper lip and over the rest of the body. This peach like fine hair is called lanugo.
The most dramatic changes Baby will undergo this week will be to her reproductive organs. If your baby is a boy his prostate is developing and if your baby is a girl her ovaries are moving from her upper abdomen into their final resting place within her pelvis.
Baby is now starting to produce hormones. Hormones are substances produced by endocrine glands and released into the blood stream where they travel to certain tissues to generate a specific response to regulate human functions. The thyroid gland is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body and is located in the neck, at this stage, Baby’s thyroid gland is starting to produce hormones.
Your Baby continues to grow in size and remarkable anatomical details can be seen. If the legs were stretched out Baby would measure approximately 3 and 1/2 inches long.
What Is Happening With You At Week 14?
For many women, when your bump begins to show, proof that there really is a baby growing can be a very confident and proud time. For many others it can be an emotional time of nerves and worry. Feeling either way can be normal at this time.
