Most Popular Baby Names

Have you been weeding through baby name books and Internet sites in search of the perfect name for your new baby?  Do you have everything lined up except the name?

Earlier this year the Social Security Administration released its list of the most popular boy and girl baby names for 2013.  If you would like a bit of inspiration from popular culture, here are the most popular baby names for this year, according to the Social Security Administration:

Male:

Jacob

Mason

Ethan

Noah

William

Liam

Jayden

Michael

Alexander

Aiden

Female:

Sophia

Emma

Isabella

Olivia

Ava

Emily

Abigail

Mia

Madison

Elizabeth

This year’s trends tend to showcase classic names, such as Jacob, Sophia, and Elizabeth.  However, names such as Chloe and Liam are newer on the top 10 list.

A bit of advice on baby naming:

Spelling.  Although it may be tempting to choose an uncommon name, or a name with a creative spelling, remember that this may set your child up for a lifetime of explaining, spelling, and correcting pronunciation.  This can cause frustration and embarrassment.  Take the time to decide carefully before giving your child an uncommon name.

Ask Friends.  If you’re in doubt about what to name your child, try asking your friends for their opinions.  They may have a good idea for a baby name, or may be able to point out a name that might not be a good idea.  Friends may also help settle a dispute when the parents can’t agree on a name.
