From the moment you see those two pink lines on a pregnancy test, most moms experience that surreal moment when you realize that there is a baby, your baby, now sharing your body with you. All of a sudden, gone are the evening glasses of wine and bags of Cheetos. You want to flood your teeny, tiny growing baby with healthy nutrition that will help him or her develop into the perfect little creature you’ve been dreaming about all your life.

So, what do you do? You quickly head straight for your nearest grocery store to stock up on oodles of healthy, vitamin-packed foods, but what you don’t know is that you’re in for a big surprise. Even the produce aisle isn’t always what it seems! What foods can you trust? When it comes to your getting the best nutrition available for you and your little one, you may be left wondering, “Where has all the good food gone?”

But not to worry! We’re here to share with you the leading culprits that can cause what you think is a healthy diet to be sub-par when it comes to nutrition.

Gone, Gone, Gone! – Modern agriculture has stripped our soils of valuable nutrients.

Long gone are small, quaint family-owned farms were entire families sat on the porch in the fading evening sunlight discussing the perfect time to pick the squash or configuring just the right type of compost to mix in which field at the right time of the year. Farms now are gigantic farming corporations owned by billionaire executives who have probably never set foot on the soil. And sadly, as a direct result, the sustainable farming practices have given way to mass production for maximum profit…which means less nutrition for our little ones!

A plant is only as good as the soil it’s grown in, just as your baby will only be as healthy as the environment that surrounds him. Sustainable farming involves knowledgeable farmers who understand the land, the seasons, and, most importantly, the crops. If the same crop is grown in the same soil year after year, it strips the nutrients from the soil. Depleted soil means less nutrients make their way into the plants that we eat. Your grocery store zucchini may look like a zucchini, but odds are there aren’t many vitamins and minerals in it. Sad, right? Huge numbers of animals are crammed into tiny pins, inside giant warehouses where little to no sunlight or even fresh air are taken in by the animals imprisoned there. Sadly, they eat, stand, sleep, and reproduce often amongst feet of animal waste, and the vast majority never even experience the wonder of outside that many of us take for granted. You’re probably thinking, “That can’t be healthy,” and you’re right! It’s definitely not!

Not only are these conditions inhumane, as animals live in absolute squalor and filth, but they lead to very low quality meat and eggs. These mass produced animals are not grazing on the natural grasses they were designed to eat, but instead, they are fed the lowest quality of processed grains possible. In most cases, they are literally fed waste and garbage, which leads to the development of chronic illnesses and painful diseases. And as if that’s not enough, they are also injected with a steady stream of antibiotics and hormones that collect in their tissues and are served right up to you (and your baby) when you order a hamburger. Not good news to hear, right? It’s important to be mindful and informed, as these harmful chemicals can cross the placenta and reach your growing bundle of joy.

 

Good news! – Grass-fed animals create healthy and nutritious meat.

Organic, grass-fed beef, pork, and free-range chickens are allowed to graze in the fresh, open air, bask in the sunlight, and eat the food that Mother Nature intended. They are under less stress, are healthier, require no antibiotics, and produce nutritious meat, eggs, and milk. There are a growing number of farmers out there who are moving their animals out of the horrid conditions of a feed lot and putting them back in the pasture, which is “nutritiously good news” for moms everywhere! The meat from grass fed animals is packed with vitamins such as A, C, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Grass-fed means that you are not ingesting a lifetime worth of chemical antibiotics that lead to bacterial resistance and disease. Instead you are supplying yourself and your baby with ample vitamins that help with brain, eye, and immune system development, and keep you both healthy.

Genetically modified organisms (or GMO) are plants or animals that have had their genetic information changed in order to produce some form of advantage or benefit. The controversy over GMO foods stems from the fact that they are creating an unbalanced ecosystem that is leading to super insects and evolved diseases.
